# How to appear in Google’s AI Overviews, and be cited in them An AI Overview is Google answering the question itself, above the results, with links to the pages it drew on. Appearing in one means being cited in it. That takes ranking for the question and for the smaller questions Google breaks it into, and it can be counted. ## When Google shows an AI Overview Not for every search. AI Overviews appear for questions with something to explain: how something works, which option suits whom, what a thing costs and why. They rarely appear for a brand name typed on its own, and for “near me” searches Google usually shows the map pack instead. In India they appear in English and in several Indian languages. When one appears, it is written from a handful of pages and each is linked. Those pages are almost always ones that rank on the first page for the query, or for one of the related queries Google runs to build the answer. So the first condition is the familiar one: rank for the question. The second is newer: rank for its parts. ## Condition one: be indexed, readable and quotable - **Be in Google’s index.** Search Console lists the pages that are. An AI Overview cannot cite a page Google has not indexed, and it cannot cite one that is blocked from snippets. - **Do not set nosnippet.** The overview is built from snippets. A page with max-snippet:0 or nosnippet keeps its ranking and loses its place in the answer. - **Put the answer under the heading.** Google lifts a passage. The heading asks the question, the first sentence answers it. - **Mark up what the page is.** An article, a product, a business with an address, a FAQ. Structured data that matches the page tells Google what kind of answer it holds. - **Load fast on a phone.** Most Indian searches are on a phone on a mobile network, and Google’s speed data feeds ranking. The dashboard’s **What Google can read** card shows your page as Google fetches it, and the [site check](https://oftheard.in/) tests the snippet rules, the markup and the speed among its hundred checks. ## Condition two: rank for the parts of the question To answer “which billing software suits a small clinic in India”, Google also searches for what billing software costs, what a clinic needs from it, and which are used in India, and it cites pages that answer those. A page that answers one part well can be cited in an overview for a question it never targeted. This is why one page per question works and one page for everything does not. A clinic-software vendor with a pricing page, a page on what a clinic needs, and a page naming the Indian cities it serves has three chances to be cited. A single home page has one. The rest is the usual second condition: comparison lists, directories and review sites that rank for the question name the brands the overview names. Being on them is the work. ## Counting it Because an AI Overview links its sources, being in one can be counted rather than guessed. Blocking Googlebot does. - **Reading one search.** The overview changes with the results under it. A count across a category, repeated monthly, is the measurement. ## Where to start this week - Clear the snippet, markup and speed items the site check names. - List the questions in your category and the parts each breaks into. Give each part a page, or a heading with the answer under it. - Get on the comparison and directory pages that rank for those questions. - Count the AI answers that link to you now, so that next month’s count means something. ## Questions ### Do AI Overviews show in India? Yes, in English and in several Indian languages, for questions with something to explain. For a “near me” search Google usually shows the map pack instead, which is why Oftheard reads the map pack as Google’s answer for those prompts. ### Can a page that ranks first be left out of the AI Overview? Yes. The overview is written from passages, and it takes the pages that answer the question and its parts most directly. A page that ranks on authority but buries the answer is passed over for one that states it under the heading. ### Does structured data get me into AI Overviews? It does not on its own, and markup that does not match the page is a risk rather than a shortcut. What it does is tell Google what kind of answer the page holds, which matters when the overview is choosing between similar pages. ### How do I know how many AI Overviews link to my site? Count them.
