How to get ChatGPT to recommend your business, when there is nothing to submit

People search for how to get their business on ChatGPT as if there were a form. There is not. ChatGPT names businesses it finds on pages when it searches, and businesses it read about while it was trained. Both can be worked on, and both can be checked.

There is no listing, so what is there?

When a buyer asks ChatGPT for a dentist in Tambaram or a billing software for a small shop, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a few of the pages it finds, and names two to five businesses in a sentence. The names come from what those pages say. Nothing you submit to OpenAI changes that, and nobody can sell you a place in it.

What you can change is whether ChatGPT can read your site, and what the pages it reads say about you. Those are the two conditions, and they fail separately: a business can be perfectly readable and never mentioned anywhere, or mentioned everywhere with a site ChatGPT cannot open.

Step one: let it read you

  • Allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. These are the crawlers that fetch a page while ChatGPT answers. GPTBot is the training crawler; blocking it is a licensing choice and does not stop you being recommended, but blocking the first two does.
  • Be in Bing’s index. ChatGPT’s search draws on Bing. Add the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and the address in Bing Places. Many Indian businesses have neither, and the site check reports it as a failing item.
  • State the plain facts on one page. What you do, for whom, where, since when, and what it costs. In sentences, in the HTML, not in an image or a script. ChatGPT quotes sentences.
  • Put the address and hours in the markup. A LocalBusiness block with the same address as your Business Profile is how an engine decides you are a real place.

Step two: be on the pages it reads

For a local question, ChatGPT reads the same pages a buyer would: directories, review sites, the map listing, and forum threads. In India that means the Google Business Profile, Justdial and Sulekha for services, IndiaMART for anything sold to businesses, Practo for clinics, and the Reddit and Quora threads where somebody asked for a recommendation in your town.

WhereWhat to make sure of
Google Business ProfileComplete, the same name and address as your site, with recent reviews
Category directoriesListed under the right category, with the town and a description in a buyer’s words
Review sitesEnough reviews that the answer can say “well rated”
Local forum threadsAnswered by you, as yourself, with your name on it
Local press and blogsThe mention that carries your name into an answer for years

This is form filling and it is the highest-value week of work available to a small business. It is also the half nobody can shortcut on their own website.

The “near me” question

A buyer in Coimbatore asking for a service near them gets a different answer from one in Chennai, because the engine searches from where the buyer is. So check from where your buyers are. Oftheard asks any question from a state or one of 787 districts, and for “near me” questions on Google reads the map pack as the answer, since that is what the buyer sees.

How to check whether ChatGPT names you

Ask it, the way a buyer would, from India, and write the answer down. Then ask again in a fortnight, because the answer changes with the search results under it. The free plan on Oftheard writes ten questions for your business and puts them to Gemini as a buyer in India; the paid plans put them to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and both of Google’s AI answers, and show who was recommended instead of you, why, and whether the engine read your site first.

What does not work

  • Paying anyone who promises a listing on ChatGPT. There is none.
  • Writing “the best dentist in Chennai” on your own page. The engine reads that claim on review sites, not on yours.
  • Posting reviews of yourself. Review sites remove them, and the engine reads the removal.

Questions

Can I list my business on ChatGPT?

No. There is no directory inside ChatGPT to submit to. It names businesses it finds on pages when it searches and businesses it read about during training, so the work is being readable and being written about on the pages it reads.

Does a Google Business Profile help with ChatGPT?

Indirectly, and it matters. ChatGPT reads the directories and review pages that draw on the profile, and a business whose name and address match across its site, its profile and its listings is treated as a real entity. Bing Places does the same for the index ChatGPT searches.

How long before ChatGPT recommends a new business?

Weeks for the readable half, months for the rest, because the rest happens on other people’s websites and the engines retrieve pages that have been up for a while. Nothing on your own site shortens the second half.

How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business in India?

Ask it the questions your buyers ask, from India, and keep the answers. Oftheard does this on every plan, with ten questions on Gemini free, and ChatGPT and the other engines on the paid plans, from the district you pick.

Stop guessing what the engines say. Measure it.

Oftheard puts your buyers’ questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and Google’s AI Mode from India, then tells you who was recommended, why, and what to change. The site check is free.
