How to rank in Google’s AI Mode, the search that answers instead of listing

AI Mode is Google Search with the results page removed. It takes the question, runs several searches of its own, reads the pages, and writes the answer with links. Being cited there means ranking for the searches it runs, not only the one the buyer typed.

What AI Mode does with a question

A buyer types one question. AI Mode breaks it into several: what the thing is, what it costs, which are available here, what people say about them. It searches for each, reads the pages that rank, and composes one answer with the sources linked, then takes follow-up questions in the same thread. Google describes this as fanning the query out.

The consequence for a brand is simple to state. You are cited when one of your pages ranks for one of the searches AI Mode ran, and you are named when the pages it read name you. Neither is the search the buyer typed.

Condition one: a page for each part

  • One question per page. AI Mode’s sub-searches are specific. A pricing page ranks for the price search; a page on who the product is for ranks for the fit search; a city page ranks for the where search. One page that tries to answer all of them ranks for none.
  • Answer in the first sentence under the heading. AI Mode quotes passages and links them.
  • Be one clear entity. The same name, address and description on your site, your Business Profile and your listings. AI Mode resolves a brand to an entity before it describes it, and a brand described three ways is described none of them.
  • Be indexed and snippetable. The same rules as AI Overviews: Googlebot allowed, no nosnippet, real text in the HTML.

The site check tests entity consistency across your pages and markup, and the dashboard shows what Google can read.

Condition two: the pages AI Mode reads

For the “which one” part of a question, AI Mode reads what everything else reads: comparison lists, directories, review sites and forum threads that rank. For the “where” part it reads Business Profiles and local directories. Being named on those pages, in the words a buyer uses, is the work that changes the answer.

The follow-up questions matter too. A buyer who asks “which of these is cheapest” in the same thread gets an answer drawn from pricing pages. A brand with a pricing page in rupees is cited; a brand with a “contact us for pricing” button is not.

Measuring it

AI Mode and AI Overviews are both Google, and they do not cite the same pages or name the same brands for the same question. Oftheard asks both, as a buyer in India, and scores each on its own tab: whether you were named, who was recommended instead, and which pages were read first. A session repeated monthly shows whether a change moved either.

What does not work

  • One long page for the whole category. It ranks for the head term and for none of the sub-searches.
  • Hiding the price. The follow-up question is usually about price, and the answer comes from pages that state one.
  • Treating AI Mode as AI Overviews. The same page is cited by one and not the other. Measure both.

Where to start this week

  1. Take your main buying question and write the four or five searches AI Mode would run for it.
  2. Give each a page or a heading with the answer beneath it. Put the price on the page.
  3. Make the entity consistent: name, address, description, everywhere.
  4. Ask AI Mode the question from India, store the answer, and ask again next month.

Questions

Is AI Mode available in India?

Yes. Google offers AI Mode in India in English and in several Indian languages, as a tab on Search and in the Google app. Oftheard reads it as a buyer in India sees it.

How is ranking in AI Mode different from ranking in Google Search?

AI Mode runs several searches for one question and cites pages that rank for any of them, then writes one answer. So a page can rank first for the typed question and be uncited, while a page that ranks for one sub-question is cited. One page per question is the practical difference.

Does AI Mode name the same brands as AI Overviews?

Not reliably. In stored sessions the two Google answers to the same question name different brands and cite different pages, which is why each is scored on its own.

How do I check what AI Mode says about my brand?

Ask it your buyers’ questions from India and store the answers. On Oftheard’s paid plans every session asks Google AI Mode alongside AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, and shows the answer, the pages read, and the comparison with the session before.

Stop guessing what the engines say. Measure it.

Oftheard puts your buyers’ questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and Google’s AI Mode from India, then tells you who was recommended, why, and what to change. The site check is free.
