How to rank on Gemini, the engine that answers from Google Search

Gemini does not keep a list of its own. When a buyer asks it who to buy from, it searches Google, reads the pages it finds, and names the brands written there. So ranking on Gemini is two jobs: being readable to Google, and being on the pages Google ranks for the question.

What Gemini is answering from

Ask the Gemini app a question about the world and it grounds the answer in Google Search. It runs the search, fetches the pages on the first results, and composes a reply that names two to five brands in a sentence. Unlike a results page, it hands the buyer no list to scroll: you are named or you are not.

That makes Gemini visibility downstream of Google ranking, but not identical to it. A page can rank fifth for a question and never be named, because the sentence Gemini writes is drawn from the pages that answer the question most directly, which are usually comparison lists and directories rather than vendor sites.

Condition one: can Gemini read you?

  • Let Googlebot in. Gemini reads Google’s index. A page Google has not indexed does not exist to it. Search Console tells you which pages are in.
  • Do not block Google-Extended. This robots token is usually described as a training opt-out, and it is also the switch for whether Gemini may use your pages when it answers. Blocking it keeps you in Google Search and takes you out of Gemini’s grounded answers.
  • Serve real text in the HTML. Gemini does not run your JavaScript at answer time. A page that is empty until a script fills it is an empty page.
  • Answer under the heading. Gemini reads passages. A heading that asks the buyer’s question with the answer in the first sentence beneath it survives being lifted out. The same answer three paragraphs down does not.
  • Say where you are. For a question asked from Chennai or from Delhi, Gemini leans on Google’s local signals: the address in your page markup, the Google Business Profile, and whether the page names the town.

All of this is checkable. The free site check runs a hundred of these tests on your own site in about half a minute, and its What Google can read card shows the page as Google sees it.

Condition two: are you on the pages Google ranks for the question?

This is the half that decides whether you are named, and it happens on other people’s websites. When Gemini answers “best CRM for a small business in India”, it does not visit each vendor. It reads the pages that already rank for that question: listicles, directories, review sites, and for a local category the Business Profile and the forum thread where somebody asked the same thing. It names what it finds there.

WhereWhy Gemini reads it
Comparison lists that already rankThe page Google returns for “best X”, so the page Gemini reads first
Directories and marketplacesIndiaMART, Justdial and the category directories that rank for buying questions in India
Review sitesWhere the word “rated” in an answer comes from
Google Business ProfileThe entity Google trusts for a business with an address
Forum and Quora threadsRetrieved for “is X any good” questions

Getting written about on those pages is slower than fixing your own markup, and it is the part that moves the answer. A perfect site with no third-party mentions is readable and invisible.

Why Gemini names different brands than ChatGPT

Because they search different indexes and read different pages. Gemini reads Google’s results; ChatGPT searches with its own crawler and draws on Bing’s index. A brand well listed on the pages Google ranks and absent from the pages Bing ranks will be named by one and not the other. This is why a single engine is never the number: in stored sessions the same question on six engines returns different names, and the useful measurement is per engine.

Gemini also answers differently from different places. Asked from a district in Tamil Nadu, a “near me” question returns different names than the same question asked from India as a whole. Oftheard asks the Gemini app for India-wide questions and asks from the district you pick for local ones, so the answer you read is the one your buyer gets.

What does not work

  • Blocking Google-Extended to protect content, then wondering why Gemini stopped naming you. It is one switch for both.
  • A “Gemini SEO” page. Gemini reads the pages Google ranks for the buyer’s question. A page about Gemini ranks for questions about Gemini.
  • Reading one answer. Ask twice, six hours apart, and the names change with the search results underneath. A series of the same prompts is a measurement; one reading is an anecdote.

Where to start this week

  1. Run the site check and clear whatever fails under crawl access and quotability. It is finite.
  2. Check Google-Extended in your robots file. If it is blocked, decide whether that was deliberate.
  3. Write the ten questions a buyer would type before choosing something like yours, and get listed on the pages that rank for them.
  4. Ask Gemini those questions, from the place your buyers are, and store the answers. The free plan asks ten of them a month.

Questions

Is ranking on Gemini the same as ranking on Google?

No, but it depends on it. Gemini reads Google’s results and names the brands written on those pages. A page that ranks is a precondition; being named in the sentence Gemini writes depends on the comparison lists, directories and reviews that answer the question, which are usually not your own site.

Does blocking Google-Extended stop Gemini from naming me?

It stops Gemini using your pages when it answers, which removes the one source that describes you in your own words. You stay in Google Search. Whether Gemini still names you then depends entirely on what other sites say about you.

Why does Gemini name my competitor and not me?

Usually because the competitor is on the pages Google ranks for the question and you are not. Sometimes because Gemini never read your site at all, which is a different problem with a different fix. A session tells the two apart, per prompt.

How do I check what Gemini says about my business in India?

Ask it the questions your buyers ask, from India, and store the answers. Oftheard’s free plan puts ten questions written for your brand to Gemini as a buyer in India, from any state or district, and shows who it recommended and whether it read your site first.

Stop guessing what the engines say. Measure it.

Oftheard puts your buyers’ questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews and Google’s AI Mode from India, then tells you who was recommended, why, and what to change. The site check is free.
